What  is  Remedial  Massage?

Remedial massage is the systematic assessment and treatment of the muscles, tendons, ligaments and connective tissues of the body to assist in rehabilitation, pain and injury management. It’s performed to create favourable conditions for the body to return to normal health after injury and is defined by the premise that the treatment can reasonably reverse certain physical effects a patient may be presenting.

If a patient has suffered a moderate injury resulting in structural pain and/or loss of function, then remediation is required to reduce or eliminate pain and restore that function.

Our Gladstone Massage remedial therapist have great knowledge of anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology to determine where to best treat you. Our therapist treatments  are based on best practice principles and before any remedial massage treatment begins, a thorough patient consultation and assessment is to be performed to ascertain the patient’s current health status. If the patient is suitable for remedial massage and relying on the patient’s feedback to identify the areas that require attention, the therapist can then apply the relevant and appropriate treatment.

At Gladstone Massage we use an objective goal of reducing your pain below a pain score of 4/10 on initial appointment. If our remedial massage therapists are unable to reduce the pain below a 4 out of 10, they may refer you on to the in clinic Physiotherapist @PhysioCall.com.au to assess and assist with treatment.

Remedial massage is designed to balance muscle/soft tissue length, tension, tone which will in turn promote the return to normal joint/capsular/bone position; increase the flow of blood and lymph, particularly in the injured areas, thus removing blockages, damaged cells, scar tissue and adhesions resulting from injury.

Our Gladstone Massage remedial therapists listen to you and what your unique needs are before each consult, therefore your treatment may require different massage techniques based on your unique requirement, which will be selected with your clinical examination and applied in a way that suits you.

Swedish massage involves long, kneading strokes combined with rhythmic tapping strokes and movement of the joints.

This type of massage targets the uppermost layer of muscles and aims to relieve muscle tension - which all of our Gladstone Massage therapists can do (Rebate and Non rebate available)

What does  a  Swedish  massage  involve?

Before the massage begins, your Gladstone Massage therapist will talk to you about your health and lifestyle. They will ask you to lie on the massage table and the therapist will cover you with towels to protect your privacy and to keep you warm. They will use creams or oils to help them to massage your skin smoothly.

The four most common strokes used in Swedish massage at Gladstone massage are:

  • Effleurage: smooth, gliding strokes to relax soft tissue
  • Petrissage: squeezing, rolling, or kneading
  • Friction: deep, circular movements to increase blood flow and break down scar tissue
  • Tapotement: tapping with cupped hands, fingers, or the edge of the hand

The  health  benefits of Swedish  massage

Many people use Swedish massage just to relax. It can also be used to help with physical conditions and has been shown to help relieve pain, stress and muscle tension. Sports people may have a Swedish massage before they compete to help them perform at their best. However there are better treatment styles depending on the sport - check out Sports Massage at Gladstone Massage.

Swedish massage can also be used to help people cope better with illnesses such as cancer, heart disease, stomach problems, fibromyalgia and lower back pain. If you plan to use Swedish massage for any health condition, talk to your doctor first.

Traditional Swedish massage, “classical massage,” consists mainly of long strokes over oiled skin and kneading of the outer layers of muscle tissue to reduce stress and soothe sore joints and muscles. Swedish massage relaxes the nervous system, aids circulation, and helps with detoxification.

The Swedish body massage has become the most common massage practice in the West, and the one that’s associated with that quintessential massage blissfulness. That’s because of the soothing strokes and gentle kneading, which are meant to relax, not stimulate, the body.

Studies have shown that Swedish massage reduces stress, promotes health, and prevents injuries. At most spas, Swedish massage is the most popular treatment, and it’s for good reason. It helps jangled nerves and releases neck knots without being too demanding of the spa-goer.

Our Gladstone Massage remedial therapists listen to you and what your unique needs are before each consult, therefore your treatment may require different massage techniques based on your unique requirement, which will be selected with your clinical examination and applied in a way that suits you.

What is  Lymphatic  drainage   massage?

Lymphatic drainage massage is a form of gentle massage that encourages the movement of lymph fluids around the body.

The fluid in the lymphatic system helps remove waste and toxins from the bodily tissues. Some health conditions can cause lymph fluid to build up. Lymphatic drainage massages can benefit people with lymphedema, fibromyalgia, and other conditions.

What are the benefits of a  Lymphatic  drainage   massage?

Lymphatic massage can improve circulation and reduce swelling.

While the heart continuously pumps blood through the blood vessels, the lymphatic system relies on the movement of smooth muscles to transport fluid through the lymph vessels.

Health conditions can interrupt the normal flow of lymph, causing lymph fluid to build up in a particular area of the body, often in the arms or legs, where it can causing swelling. This condition is called lymphedema.

People can develop lymphedema as a result of infections, cancer treatments that involve the removal of lymph nodes, and any condition that damages the lymphatic system.

Lymphatic massage can reduce swelling and improve circulation throughout the lymphatic system. Lymphatic massage usually forms part of a treatment program called decongestive lymphatic therapy (DLT).

DLT for lymphedema includes:

  • lymphatic drainage massage
  • compression garments
  • exercise
  • skin care

Who  can  benefit  FROM  A  LYMPHATIC  MASSAGE?

Lymphatic drainage massage can benefit people who are experiencing the following:

  • lymphedema
  • fibromyalgia
  • swelling or odema
  • skin disorders
  • fatigue
  • insomnia
  • stress
  • digestive problems
  • arthritis
  • migraine episodes

The authors of a 2015 systematic review concluded that lymphatic massage might be more effective than connective tissue massage in relieving symptoms of stiffness and depression in people living with fibromyalgia.

People should not have a lymphatic massage if they have congestive heart failure, blood clots, kidney problems, infections, or circulation problems. If a person has any medical conditions, they should talk to a doctor before trying a lymphatic massage.

What to expect with  a  lymphatic   massage  at Gladstone Massage?

People will receive lymphatic massages from trained remedial and relax massage professionals.

Before the massage begins, your Gladstone Massage therapist will talk to you about your health and lifestyle. They will ask you to lie on the massage table and the therapist will cover you with towels to protect your privacy and to keep you warm. They will use creams or oils to help them to massage your skin smoothly.

Things our Gladstone Massage therapists will be mindful of during a lymphatic massage:

* That their massage movements should affect only the skin, so use gentle pressure and do not press hard enough to feel the muscles.

* To keep the hands relaxed.

* Avoiding swollen or infected areas.

* Avoiding areas of the body that have undergone treatment for cancer.

* To remind you to drink extra fluids, ideally 2 to 4 glasses of water, after each massage to help flush the body.

What is the Lymphatic System?

Your lymphatic system’s major roles is to collect excess fluid from the tissues, purify it and return it to the blood stream. This role is important because many substances are continuously leaking out of the blood capillaries into the surrounding tissues. When your lymphatic system fails to sweep up these excess fluids, they can accumulate, cause swelling and potentially increase the risk of infection. An efficient lymphatic system helps to defend your body against germs such as bacteria, viruses & fungi that may cause illness. Luckily, an effective lymphatic systems silently works in the background keeping you healthy.

The lymphatic system drains the fluid into specific regions of your body such as your armpits and groin where there is a concentration of lymph nodes. The lymph nodes contain lymphocytes (a type of white blood cell) & some of these lymphocytes contain antibodies that fight off germs (including cancer cells) & stops infection from spreading throughout the body. The good news is that lymphatic massage rapidly speeds up your lymphatic system and its capacity to fight disease and viruses, remove toxins and waste products, reduce swelling, filter lymph fluid and your blood, leading to your better health.

Deep Tissue Massage

Deep tissue  MASSAGE

Deep tissue massage techniques are used to break up scar tissue and physically break down muscle "knots" or adhesions (bands of painful, rigid tissue) that can disrupt circulation and cause pain, limited range of motion, and inflammation. Massage therapists may use fingertips, knuckles, hands, elbows, and forearms during a deep tissue massage. You may be asked to breathe deeply as the massage therapist works on tense areas.

After the massage, you may feel some stiffness or soreness, but it should subside within a day or so. Be sure to contact your massage therapist if you have concerns or if you feel pain after having a massage. Drinking water after the massage may help to flush the metabolic waste from the tissues.

How  Does  a  Sports  Massage  Differ  to  Regular  Massage  at Gladstone  Massage?

Sports can be repetitive, especially for runners, cyclists, team sports players (football, soccer, hockey, netball, basketball etc) and cross fit /weightlifters. In a sports massage, the therapist generally concentrates on a specific problem area that you present, usually related to repetitive movements in your daily activities, related to the sport.
Regular massage differs in both its purpose and the techniques used. While nearly all massage therapists can perform regular massage, only those with specific sports massage skills are adequately equipped to perform a sublime sports massage.

SO  WHICH   MASSAGE  IS  BEST?

The answer to that lies on the individual and their lifestyle. Remember, there is no right or wrong here and Massage is fluid!
Gladstone Massage therapists can tailor to your needs depending on where you are within your training program. If you’re unsure, default to a Remedial Massage.
