What  is  SPORTS   massage?

Sports massage is specifically tailored to different sports and sporting injuries - It is important to let your Gladstone Massage therapist know which sport you are preparing for or participating in. It is NOT a relaxing form of massage and can often be quite strenuous and or stimulating. It works by stretching tight muscles, exciting inactive muscles and improving the condition of the soft tissue. Gladstone Massage therapist generally use this treatment type before or after a sporting event.

The aim of sports massage is to reduce the stress and tension that can build up in the soft tissues of the body during exercise.

This form of massage is used to:
  • increase endurance
  • improve performance
  • reduce the chance of injury
  • reduce recovery time after an injury.

What does  a  SPORTS  massage  involve?

Before the massage begins, your therapist will talk to you about your health and lifestyle. The Gladstone Massage therapist will ask you to lie on a massage table and will cover you with towels to protect your privacy and to keep you warm. They will use creams or oils to help them to massage your skin smoothly.

Sports massage uses techniques found in other disciplines like physiotherapy and myotherapy.

Techniques include:
  • soft tissue release: locking and stretching the tissues and muscles
  • neuromuscular technique: targeting trigger points in the nervous system to get rid of pain and tension
  • positional release: used to relax hyperactive muscles
  • fascial release: deep, slow kneading used to release the connective tissues around the muscles.p, slow kneading used to release the connective tissues around the muscles.

You will be expected to move around quite a lot and communicate continually with your therapist so they can respond to how your body is feeling. You might feel some discomfort during a sports massage. Always tell your therapist if you are in any pain.

The  health  benefits of SPORTS   massage

The health benefits of sports massage at Gladstone Massage

One of the main benefits of sports massage at Gladstone Massage is that it can prevent you from getting sore muscles after you exercise  DOMS (known as 'delayed onset muscle soreness'). It will also help you exercise more efficiently and prevent some of the common ailments that go with exercise.

Sports massage may also improve your heart rate and blood pressure, increase your circulation and lymph flow, and help treat injuries, including shin splint, tennis elbow, sprains and strains.

Sports massage is often safe after an injury, although there are some injuries for which it is not suitable. If you are using sports massage for any health condition or injury, talk to your doctor or physiotherapist first.

How  Does  a  Sports  Massage  Differ  to  Regular  Massage  at Gladstone  Massage?

Sports can be repetitive, especially for runners, cyclists, team sports players (football, soccer, hockey, netball, basketball etc) and cross fit /weightlifters. In a sports massage, the therapist generally concentrates on a specific problem area that you present, usually related to repetitive movements in your daily activities, related to the sport.

Regular massage differs in both its purpose and the techniques used. While nearly all massage therapists can perform regular massage, only those with specific sports massage skills are adequately equipped to perform a sublime sports massage.

SO  WHICH   MASSAGE  IS  BEST?

The answer to that lies on the individual and their lifestyle. Remember, there is no right or wrong here and Massage is fluid!
Gladstone Massage therapists can tailor to your needs depending on where you are within your training program. If you’re unsure, default to a Remedial Massage.

I’m a triathlete, when is the best time for my massage?

Schedule a Remedial Massage during your taper periods and a Sports Massage pre/post event. These pre and post event Massages are lighter in nature, use longer strokes and are more geared towards flushing the muscles and getting them prepped for the race (or are focussed on recovery!).

Their aim is to cause minimal inflammation and soreness.

If you are working towards body building and sculpting competitions, you will also need a Remedial or Deep Tissue Massage.

Throughout your training program we recommend Remedial  Massage - However not the during the 7 days leading up to your event.

A modified Sports Massage is ideal about 3-15 days before or after the competition, the reason is that body fat gets very low and overall the body can be dehydrated. A strong massage during this time will not leave you in optimal position for competition day.

Contraindications of Sports Massage at Gladstone Massage, in times when you are presenting with these forms of health issues, perhaps our Gladstone Physiotherapist @PhysioCall.com.au can assist we an intervention or treatment that doesn’t require hands on therapy.
